10-18 October is European Code Week

I and my colleague Pınar, we are two excited young teachers fall in love in codes and programming. We believe that kids needs to learn basic programming skills for their future life. We believe basic programming skills will change their way of thinking in a good way.

We live in a small city on the north of the Turkey, in blacksea region, called Rize. Rize is very limited city for kid activities. We decided to run a code week festival during code week this year with our volunteer students.

We wanted to show kids that everything we do in our daily life could be expressed with programming language. We expressed what is an instruction and functions, what is a variable etc. a Dance activity (penguen dance) helped us to explain what an instruction is. We prepared games to teach basic programming structures such as if -else , for , while. We had a maze game such as in Scratch. We also had a kitchen session in order to make a cake following instructions. Then, we had a computer lab session to play maze game in Scracth.

60 students form 3 different school joined our code week activities.

Students were from a class of a local school that kids are from villages around the city. We had clowns and baloons in the activity area to make colorful for kids. There were kids they see a clown  at the first time in their life. They got very excited en enjoyed a lot following instructions of clowns.

Kids understood “if-else” and “while” concept very quickly and they could infere “for” after learning while and if-else. They were very good at Maze game, giving instruction to clowns to make reach them the the target. After physical games and activities, they went to computer lab to play with Scratch Labirent game. Without any help, they could play until 13th level of total 20 in an hour. It is a great success for the kids that they were not used to play with computers at all and also never play with Scratch  before.

After the activity day, teacher observed that students joined our code week activity told other student that they enjoy and learn a lot. They also tried to teach Penguen Dance to others. Teacher also told us that a kid who has some problems usually dont participate any games they do in class, but he participated games we played.

Making cake was very exciting activity for kids. Each kid had a duty in cake activity. One is supplier, one is combiner, one is beater, one is filler the cake in cups. They had a team. They decided what kind of cake they want to make. We gave them two options. Cocoa or lemon cake. Generally kids wanted to make cocoa cake. While making cake, we realized that some kids had not broken an egg yet in their life. It was their first time making a cake. They had a good experience. We focused that making cake was a daily activity for their mom. They actually follow and instruction, decide variables and make a cake for you. It was an effective activity to explain programme and how a programme runs. We showed that “if-else”, “while” and “for” structures in making cake activity.

We had been invited from a school in Trabzon, which is the neighbour city. But we could dont go since we had to work. They wanted to come to our activity but it was difficult to get permission to take students out of the city. We thought that it would be great to rent a caravan and call it “Programming Caravan” with some computers in it. We would like to visit schools in villages, play games with them and practice Scratch in the caravan. To go to where kids will be easier inviting kids to the activity place.

If we can arrange code week activites next year, we would like to do a “Mobile Caravan for Programming” and visit school around the city.

At the begining we wanted to include parents in order to inform them about the importance of programming for kids, safe internet usage etc. But it became very difficult to attract parents to our activity in a shour time. We will think another way to reach parents. Maybe Mobile Caravan could be attractive for them to come and get information about how they can orient their kids for safe internet usage or improving programming skills etc.
